Job Description

Position Summary

Multisystemic Therapy is an evidence-based therapeutic model designed to provide community-based treatment for the families of juveniles who are involved, or at risk of being involved, in the juvenile justice system; thereby reducing their risk of being placed outside of the home. MST focuses on treating the youth within their natural ecology by addressing the multisystemic factors that impact their behaviors within their family, peer group, school setting, and community. As an MST therapist, you would engage their primary caregiver and other key participants across the systems in developing and implementing interventions to improve school attendance and performance, decrease substance use, increase prosocial connections, and improve family functioning. Job Responsibilities

  • Provide treatment in individual families' homes in a wide array of settings and communities
  • Carry a small caseload of 4-5 families in order to work with them intensely multiple times per week.
  • Maintains on-call availability to clients during the week. Therapists rotate on-call availability on weekends, requiring approximately one on-call weekend per month
  • Engage in intense training and supervision to learn how to effectively implement the MST model
  • Engage primary caregiver and other key participants in active change-oriented treatment by identifying and overcoming barriers to engagement.
  • Utilize an array of evidence based clinical skills including cognitive behavioral techniques, pragmatic family therapies, family systems theory, behavioral therapies, social ecological model, marital therapy, and contingency management



Masters in Social Work or related clinical degree and one (1) year post-graduate experience.  Prior related experience may be substituted for one (1) year post-graduate requirement.  Must be flexible, oriented to family work and possess the ability to adapt to the MST model.  Must have a valid New York State driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Is sensitive to cultural differences and able to incorporate that understanding into service provision.  Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment and an understanding of clinical issues affecting families in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.  Is able to identify strengths in others.  Demonstrates a genuine interest to be of help to others and a desire to overcome obstacles to instill hope.  Performs well in a team approach.  Possesses ability to manage flexible hours in order to work effectively with families.  Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb stairs and lift objects of up to 10lbs as required.
